Through authentic, student-centered projects, gifted and creative learners tackle real-world environmental science problems designed to capture students' interest and provoke rigorous thinking as the students acquire and apply new knowledge in a problem-solving context.
Teachers at Sierra Gifted work with students to frame worthwhile questions, structure meaningful tasks, and coach both knowledge development and social skills. Because students have a say in what they learn and how they demonstrate mastery of the material, they are more engaged in the learning process.

Mathematics, Reading, and Writing
Strong foundations in mathematics, reading, and writing are fundamental to success in school and beyond. Therefore, mathematics and reading/writing are not only incorporated into our multidisciplinary projects but are also taught as separate subjects. For example, the rigorous, research-backed Art of Problem Solving / Beast Academy will be the starting point for mathematics. For reading and writing, students will explore carefully selected, challenging works of literature as part of an inquiry-based curriculum developed by the William and Mary Center for Gifted Education.
Students will work in learning groups based on ability rather than age or grade.
Sierra Gifted Environmental School strives to meet each student where they are and to provide a challenging learning environment to help gifted and creative learners achieve their fullest potential.
Exploring Beyond the Core
Beyond the core courses, art, photography, music, mixed media presentations, and other creative skills are integrated into projects. Additionally, gifted and creative learners will have the opportunity to explore other interests individually or in small groups.
